Essay

A thesis is a final assignment that students must write as a requirement for completing their study program and earning a Bachelor of Laws ( SH ) degree. The nature of writing a thesis is holistic, encompassing all aspects related to legal science.

1. Types of Final Papers

There are four types of theses available to students: Thesis, Legal Memorandum, and Legal Case Study. The Faculty of Law provides a free thesis guidebook to students.

2. Requirements

Based on Dean's Regulation Number 3 of 2016, to register for writing a thesis, students must fulfill the following requirements:

  • have 'active' status as a student;
  • complete 120 credits;
  • GPA 2,50; and
  • complete the Legal Research Methods course with a minimum grade of “C”.

3. Procedure

The procedure for taking a thesis can be explained as follows:

  • In each semester, every student who has fulfilled the requirements to take a Thesis must do Key-In RAS by inputting the Thesis;
  • Pay the thesis consultation fee at Bank Bukopin located in the Tamansiswa campus area;
  • Download, print and fill out the form to submit the thesis title;
  • Submit the form to the Academic Section by attaching the specified requirements;
  • After the student submits the thesis title application form along with the requirements as referred to in letter d, the student then waits for the decision regarding the determination of the title and Thesis Supervisor by the Head of the Study Program/Head of the Department related to the thesis topic/title; and
  • After the thesis title and thesis supervisor as referred to in point e have been determined, the student will be accompanied by their thesis supervisor.
  • After the student's thesis is completed and approved by their supervisor, they must take a thesis examination.

4. Thesis Consultation

Students must actively consult with their supervisors about their writing progress and any issues. Consultations can be conducted via messaging or social media platforms, provided that a specific agreement is reached with the supervisor. A minimum of eight consultations must be held, and these meetings must be recorded on the thesis consultation card.

To improve the quality of student research, the Faculty holds an annual thesis methodology training course for students interested in learning about the research process during their thesis writing. This event is optional but free of charge each year.

5. Thesis Proposal Seminar

Students must write a thesis proposal and present it at a seminar. Before submitting a proposal, students are required to consult their proposal at least three times. Students must submit a thesis proposal that has been approved by the supervisor to the Academic Section. If there is more than one supervisor, then approval must be from all supervisors. The proposal seminar will be held no later than 14 working days after the student submits the seminar registration to the Academic Section. The proposal seminar will be held with the department and attended by at least 2 (two) lecturers. The examiners for the proposal seminar may come from other departments related to their competence. The examination of the thesis proposal includes aspects of substance, writing system, and research methods. At the end of the seminar, the examiners must state the final conclusion whether the thesis proposal is accepted or accepted with minor/major revisions or rejected. If the decision is rejected, the student must write a new thesis proposal.

6.Consultation Period

Consultations are conducted within a different semester period and are recorded in the Consultation Card. If within a semester the student has not completed the thesis, the consultation can be extended for 3 months. If within the extension period the student has not been able to complete the thesis, the extension must be done with the approval of the supervisor and accompanied by a statement signed by the student and the supervisor which at least includes: the development of the thesis writing; the ability to complete the thesis within a maximum of 3 months; and the ability to submit a new title if the thesis has not completed the deadline. If within the time limit the student is unable to complete the thesis, then he must submit a new title.

7. Replacement of Supervisor

Students may change their supervisors from the same department or another department. Changing supervisors may be done for specific reasons, such as recommendations from seminar proposal examiners, the student's inability to maintain good communication with the supervisor, or the expiration of the extension period. To change supervisors, students must complete and sign a form and follow the procedures outlined in the Academic Section.

8. Thesis Examination

  • Examination Procedure
    1. Students must submit the following documents:
      • 3 (three) copies of the thesis signed in original by the content supervisor;
      • 1 (one) page endorsement ( endorsement page );
      • 1 (one) copy of the minutes of the seminar proposal meeting;
      • 1 (one) photocopy of the Assignment Completion Status form showing the passing grade for all courses (except the final assignment) with a minimum total GPA of 2,75;
      • 1 (one) photocopy of a legalized CEPT certificate with a minimum score of 640 or a TOEFL ITP certificate with a minimum score of 550. Students are required to show the original certificate to the Academic Affairs officer when submitting documents;
      • Thesis Consultation Card which has been signed by the Contents Supervisor and shows that consultations have been conducted at least 8 (eight) times;
      • receipt of payment for the thesis examination from the designated bank;
      • 2 (two) copies of High School Diploma;
      • 2 (two) copies of birth certificate;
      • 1 (one) photocopy of the social service certificate (KKN); and
      • 3 (three) 3×4 passport photos and 4 (four) 4×6 passport photos. Photos must be recent, formal, and comply with university regulations.
    2. The Dean will issue a decision regarding the list of examiners and the thesis examination schedule. The decision will be issued 7 (seven) days after the thesis examination registration closes.
  •  Thesis defense

The thesis defense is determined based on the schedule outlined in the Dean's decision. The thesis defense is attended by three examiners or at least two examiners in a panel. The three examiners consist of the student's supervisor, a lecturer whose competence is related to the thesis topic, and a lecturer who is an expert in Islamic law. If an examiner is unable to attend the thesis defense, the defense may be postponed for a maximum of 1 (one) week from the scheduled date. If the defense is still unable to be held after the postponement, the Faculty, through the Head of the Study Program, may appoint another examiner to replace the examiner who is unable to attend.

9. Evaluation

  • Value

The final thesis exam results will be calculated based on an alphabetical order of grades, which are a translation of the average number of marks obtained by the examiner. There are four aspects to measure the quality of the final assignment, namely: thesis substance, research methods, the ability to understand the relationship between general legal principles and the thesis substance, and the Islamic legal aspects of the thesis. Exam assessment must be carried out by examiners based on the study program's assessment standards. To pass this program, each student must obtain a minimum grade of "B" on the thesis exam.

  • Final Project Revision

Thesis examiners have the authority to ask students to revise their thesis after the examination. Students must revise their thesis based on the examiners' comments. Once the examiners approve the revisions, they must sign the student's final thesis.
