Event Details
International Conference and The 8th International Student Colloquium 2026
Background
The contemporary global landscape is increasingly shaped by the intersection of armed conflict, energy insecurity, and the urgent pursuit of sustainable development. Ongoing geopolitical tensions and wars have disrupted energy supply chains, intensified price volatility, and exposed structural vulnerabilities in global energy governance. These conditions not only threaten economic stability but also undermine efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to affordable and clean energy, climate action, and peace, justice, and strong institutions. In this context, the role of law becomes crucial in mediating competing interests and ensuring that responses to crises remain anchored in principles of justice, sustainability, and international cooperation.
Armed conflicts have demonstrated their far-reaching implications beyond immediate humanitarian concerns, extending into environmental degradation and long-term developmental setbacks. Energy infrastructure is often both a target and a tool within conflicts, leading to cascading effects on civilian populations and national economies. At the same time, the global transition toward sustainable energy systems faces setbacks due to instability and shifting political priorities. These dynamics call for a comprehensive legal framework that can address not only the regulation of armed conflict but also the governance of energy resources and environmental protection in fragile and conflict-affected settings.
In light of these challenges, the law serves as a critical instrument for shaping resilient and adaptive responses. International humanitarian law, energy law, environmental law, and human rights law must operate in a coherent and integrated manner to address the multidimensional impacts of conflict-driven energy crises. Legal scholarship and policy innovation are therefore essential to bridge normative gaps, strengthen accountability mechanisms, and promote sustainable and equitable energy transitions even in times of instability. The involvement of academic institutions is particularly important in fostering critical discourse and generating forward-looking solutions grounded in legal reasoning.
Accordingly, this conference, organized by the International Undergraduate Study Program in Law, Faculty of Law, Universitas Islam Indonesia, aims to provide a platform for scholars, practitioners, and students to engage in interdisciplinary dialogue on these pressing issues. The conference seeks to explore the evolving role of law in responding to the intertwined challenges of armed conflict, energy crisis, and sustainable development, while also encouraging the development of innovative legal approaches that enhance global resilience. Through this forum, participants are expected to contribute to the advancement of legal thought and policy recommendations that support sustainable and just outcomes in an increasingly uncertain world.
