Guest Lecture on Islamic Banking Customer Data Protection: Malaysian Legal Perspective with Assoc. Prof. Sonny Zulhuda, Ph.D., MCL., LL.B

The International Program of the Faculty of Law, Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII), successfully organized an interactive guest lecture featuring a prominent legal expert from Malaysia, Assoc. Prof. Sonny Zulhuda, Ph.D., MCL., LL.B. The event, themed “Islamic Banking Customer Data Protection: Malaysian Legal Perspective,” took place on Friday, October 10, 2025, and was attended by approximately 50 students, lecturers, and educational staff.

In his presentation, Assoc. Prof. Sonny Zulhuda highlighted the urgency of customer data protection, especially in the context of Islamic banking, which has recently become a crucial issue in Indonesia, such as the data breach case at Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI). He drew comparisons with the situation in Malaysia, where personal data protection regulations are strictly enforced. “In Malaysia, personal data protection is extremely crucial, and many companies, especially in the banking sector, have faced legal action due to negligence in data management,” stated Assoc. Prof. Sonny Zulhuda.

The two-hour guest lecture provided new insights for participants into best practices and legal challenges related to Islamic banking customer data protection. The event concluded with the presentation of a souvenir by Mr. Bagya Agung Prabowo, S.H., M.Hum., Ph.D., as the Secretary of the Regular Program, Undergraduate Program in Law, at the Faculty of Law UII, as a token of appreciation to the speaker.

The Head of the Undergraduate Program in Law, Dodik Setiawan Nur Heriyanto, S.H., M.H., LL.M., Ph.D., expressed his appreciation. “The Study Program greatly appreciates the presence of Assoc. Prof. Sonny Zulhuda, Ph.D., MCL, LL.B., to deliver a guest lecture at the Faculty of Law, UII. We hope that more activities can be carried out to facilitate the transfer of knowledge, especially concerning legal developments in Malaysia, to students of the Undergraduate Program in Law, particularly those from the International Program,” he said.

Before the guest lecture, Assoc. Prof. Sonny Zulhuda also had a friendly gathering in the Faculty Lounge with the leadership of the Faculty of Law UII, including the Dean, Vice Dean for Religious Affairs, Student Affairs and Alumni, Head of the Undergraduate Program in Law, Head of the Undergraduate Program in Business Law, and Secretary of the Regular Program. This meeting also discussed potential future collaborations between the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII).
