Internship Briefing Session for Students

Around 378 students took part in the internship debriefing program held by PUSDIKLAT FH UII on Sunday, October 13, 2019. The number jumped sharply from the previous year which was only attended by around 100 students. The apprenticeship activities are a manifestation of the compulsory competence of legal skills carried out by FH UII.

The internship briefing was carried out in two sessions. According to the Head of the Ad Hoc Team of Internship, Eko Rial Nugroho, SH., MH., the internship implementation for this year is still the same as in previous years. “The stages are still the same, there is no change,” Eko added. The debriefing program is conducive. Students are divided into six different classes and get guidance on introductions about general things to technical matters.

Regarding the increasing number of apprenticeship students, according to Eko there were no significant problems. Eko admitted that there were indeed some technical obstacles, but they did not affect the general implementation of the internship. “There are technical problems. (But) Alhamdulillah, it can be handled well “, he stressed.

The internship program itself is divided into two types, namely regular internship and self-internship. Regular internship is an internship in which the destination location is determined and prepared by PUSDIKLAT FH UII, as the internship program implementer. Matters prepared include permits, apprenticeship agreements, until to all administrative matters. As for the self-internship students, they prepare and choose their own internship location.

Students will be placed in various locations. The locations of apprenticeship to be addressed include the notary/PPAT office, the attorney’s office, the lawyer’s office, the court, the local government law firm, the police, and the embassy. All the internship locations will be monitored by the internship committee.

Eko suspected that the cause of the increase in apprenticeship students was the result of the loss of the academic prerequisite system. “It is suspected to have jumped the most because there are no academic prerequisites. “The internship should be in the 2016 class, but 2017 has already taken”, said Eko. However, according to Eko that was not a problem.

According to the Deputy Chair of the Ad Hoc Committee of the Internship, Dodik Setiawan Nur Heriyanto, SH., MH., L.LM., Ph.D., the most regular internship students chose the Prosecutor’s Office while for the most independent apprentices the notary office. “The most regular apprenticeship is at the prosecutor’s office and self-internship at the notary,” said Dodik Setiawan. “Maybe there are many whose parents are notaries, so they might as well,” joked Dodik Setiawan, who was agreed by some students, when he filled out the debriefing material in class.

The internship must be followed by students for a minimum of 96 working hours in each office location. At the end of the program, students are required to make reports and respond. “All who have followed the internship process from beginning to end will receive internship certificates,” added Dodik Setiawan.

Curiosity of Students to do intern at the Indonesian Commission for the Supervision of Bussiness Competition

Starting 22 January 2019, students at the Undergraduate Study Program of Law have an opportunity to do their internship program at the Indonesian Commission for the Supervision of Bussiness Competition. The Commission and the Faculty of Law UII signed the mutual agreement to support the four main university activities in connection with the role of the Commission in Indonesia. “We have a good relationship so far. We sent our lecturers to the expert staff for the Commission. But we want to do more especially the need of a legal framework to support our student to do an internship program at the Commission.” said the Dean.

On 22 January 2019, the internship program has been started for our four students. They are Dewi Anggraini (Fourth Year Student), Aditya Krisdamara (Fourth Year Student), Caroline Zahira Lathifa (Third Year Student), and Fadhiel Naufaldi (Third Year Student). “They will do the internship for a month. Hopefully, they could gather all the experience during intern at our office” said Ratmawan, staff member of the Commission during the welcoming of our students.

“So far, we do have sufficient numbers of agreements with the external institutions to support the internship program. We do hope that students are able to have freedom to choose and to get more experience during study at the Faculty of Law UII” said Dodik Setiawan Nur Heriyanto, SH, MH, LLM, PhD, the students supervisor of the internship program.

Review of the Internship Program for Students

On 5th of January 2019, the Central of Education and Legal Training Centre organized a specific workshop with the topic of “A Review of the Internship Program of the Faculty of Law, UII”. The workshop held at Grand Inna Malioboro Hotel with the full-day meeting.

“We understand well that our internship program must be reviewed since we started this program for the first time at this semester. We do hope that this meeting could propose major revision on our model.” said the Dean of the Faculty of Law UII at the opening speech.

Dr. Budi Agus Riswandhi, SH, MHum as the Head of the Study Program elaborated the ideal model of the internship program. “But this ideal model takes time to adopt at our current program. As the priority, we must have new course specification and syllabus as the based documents of the program. The guidebook for students must also be specifically based on the specific legal profession. The most important thing is that all those elaborations must be based on the currently expected learning outcomes” explained Head of the Studi Program Faculty of Law UII.

“Previously, we conducted a field study to Faculty of Law Universitas Negeri Sebelas Maret and Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang. Those two law schools have been opening the internship program for more than 5 (five) years. We can also use their good practices as a reference to our internship model.” explained Nurjihad, SH, MH as the chair of the second session.

The workshop was ended with the result of three important draft documents: syllabus, course specification, and marking guideline. The draft would be legalized by the study programme and being used as the new guideline of the internship program.

Learning Internship Management Experience from School of Law, UNS

Starting the Odd Semester academic year 2018/2019, Faculty of Law, Universitas Islam Indonesia applies the new curriculum system by including the subject of the internship. “This subject is worth 2 credits and compulsory subject for each law students. They will learn how the application of theories they learned from the classroom to working reality. The law school has maintained deep cooperation among working institutions such as law firms, public notary, government institutions (local and center), and even private institutions. That cooperation includes the opportunity of our students to take an internship for a semester in maximum to get working experience.” said Eko Rial Nugroho as the head of the team organizing the internship management.

To get better management system in organizing the internship for the law students, the team held a short visit to the Legal Laboratory, Faculty of Law, Universitas Negeri Sebelas Maret (UNS), Solo on Thursday, 20 December 2018. “Internship for the students of this faculty (UNS), has been implemented for almost a decade. However, an internship is a mandatory program which must be followed by our students during the semester break. Each student must be doing intern at our chosen institutions for minimum 1 (one) month. ” explained Mr. Yus as the Head of the Legal Laboratory of the Faculty of Law, UNS at the beginning of the forum held at the meeting room of the faculty building.

The team of the Faculty was represented by the Head, secretary, and the management team of the internship program of the Faculty of Law, UII. The team proposed several questions asking about good practices of the internship management system at the Faculty of Law, UNS. At the end of the session, Dodik Setiawan Nur Heriyanto as representative of the study programme of Faculty of Law UII shared token appreciation to the host of the meeting. “We learned a lot during the discussion. We are not only getting the knowledge on how to manage the internship program. We also thank for the documents that shared by the UNS for our reference.” explained Dodik during the closing speech.
