A. Definition of Thesis
Thesis is a scientific research work as a final project and one of the prerequisites to obtain a Master Degree in Notarial Law (M.Kn). The thesis writing covers a wide array of substantial and methodological aspects. Students can raise issues ranging from normative, empirical studies, and/or a combination of both in their thesis for the Master’s Program in Notarial Law, Faculty of Law, Universitas Islam Indonesia.

B. Characteristics of Thesis in Notarial Law
Thesis of students of Master’s Program in Notarial Law, Faculty of Law UII integrates legal scientific aspects and expertise in the field of notarial law, which reflects the achievement of basic competencies and expertise competencies in accordance with the curriculum design and is underpinned by Islamic values.

C. Thesis Weight
Thesis weight is calculated based on the semester credit and is equivalent to 6 credits.

D. Thesis Writing Requirements
1. Academic Requirements
a. Students have taken all required courses in Semester 1.
b. Students are required to have a minimum score of B for Legal Research Methodology.

2. Tuition and Fees
Students are required to pay the tuition fee at least for the third installment.

E. Procedure for Applying a Thesis

The entire procedure for the final project, starting from submitting a supervisor to the thesis examination, is carried out through the Final Project System (SISTA).
1. Thesis Writing Procedure

  1. Students submit the title and apply for a potential thesis supervisor to the Program through the Final Assignment Information System (SISTA) provided by the program;
  2. Once the application is approved by the Head of the Program through the issuance of a Supervision Decree, the students meet their supervisor for the thesis mentoring;
  3. Supervision can be done offline/online. The supervision must be recorded in a progress report to be submitted to the Program at the end of the period for thesis writing supervision.
  4. For thesis supervision conducted outside the SISTA record, students are required to fill out a supervision card along with proof of communication with the supervisor;
  5. Thesis supervision is carried out within a period of 6 (six) months from the issuance of the Decree on the Appointment of Thesis Supervisor by the Head of the Program.
  6. In the event that the student has not been able to complete the thesis writing during the supervision, the student may apply for an extended thesis supervision for a period of 6 months. In the event that the student is unable to complete the thesis writing after the extension, the student is charged with a fee of IDR750.000 per 6 months to have another extension.

2. Supervisor Criteria

  1. Supervisors are lecturer of Master’s Program in Notarial Law, Faculty of Law, Universitas Islam Indonesia who hold a Doctorate degree;
  2. Supervisors are appointed and determined by the Head of the Program;
  3. The appointment of the thesis supervisor is based on the conformity between the lecturer’s expertise and the thesis topic and/or the proportionality of the number of students for each supervisor;
  4. If deemed necessary, a practitioner from the notarial profession who holds a master degree and has worked for at least 10 (ten years) can be appointed as supervisor II.

3. Supervisor Change

  1. Students can apply for replacement or addition of supervisors to the Head of the Program no later than 2 (two) months from the start of the supervision period.
  2. Replacement or addition of supervisors can be done if:
    1) The seminar proposal recommends the replacement or addition of supervisors;
    2) Students experience a communication problem with the supervisor;
    3) The current supervisor requests for a change; or
    4) The period of supervision has ended.
    5) Change of supervisor is subject to a fee of Rp500,000,-.

4. Terms and Procedures for a Proposal Seminar

  1. The Proposal Seminar must be attended by every student;
  2. Proposals are submitted to the program for seminars after being approved by the supervisor;
  3. Proposals for seminars must be submitted at the Secretariat at least 10 days before the date of the seminar;
  4. Proposal Seminar require 3 examiners, consisting of supervisor and examiners who have relevant scientific expertise with the topic of proposals submitted by students;
  5. After the proposal presentation in the seminar, students will receive a Minutes of the Seminar, which contains the assessments of the examiners;
  6. The assessment on the Proposal Seminar is written in the following qualitative and narrative description, namely: FEASIBLE TO PROCEED WITHOUT REVISION, FEASIBLE TO PROCEED WITH SOME REVISION or NOT FEASIBLE TO STUDY, supported by the reasons and input for the assessment;
  7. If the results of the seminar assessment are: FEASIBLE TO PROCEED WITHOUT REVISION, or FEASIBLE TO PROCEED WITH SOME REVISION, the student has the right to proceed the thesis writing;
  8. If the assessment of the proposal decides that the proposal is: NOT FEASIBLE TO STUDY, the student must rework on his proposal with the supervisor and have a retake of Proposal Seminar;
  9. Thesis supervision period is valid for 6 months;
  10. If within 6 months the student has not been able to complete the thesis, the supervision can be extended for the following 6 months.
  11. Proposal seminars can be conducted offline/online with the approval of the Head of the Program.

5. Terms and Procedures for Thesis Examination

  1. Prior to the thesis exam, the supervisor(s) has checked, and approved the thesis draft by signing the approval page;
  2. The student write a signed and sealed statement regarding the originality of the thesis and willingness to be held liable for the academic consequences if later evidence is found that the thesis written is not original (plagiarism);
  3. Students have paid off the last tuition/installment fees;
  4. Students are required to pass all required courses, have no grade below C, and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  5. Prior to having thesis exam, students must upload and register the thesis manuscript through SISTA, and collect other requirements according to the schedule set by the Program;
  6. Thesis Board of Examiners consists of 3 people: supervisors and non-supervisors who have relevant scientific expertise with the research topic of a thesis proposed by students, and those who are appointed by the Head of the Program;
  7. The structure of the board of examiners consists of 1 Chairman and 2  Members of Board of Examiners;
  8. Thesis defense are conducted in an assembly by a board of examiners and are open to students on a limited basis;
  9. Each examiner scores students’ performance in numeric score;
  10. The assessment of students’ work and performance on thesis exam is written in numeric score to be converted into capital letters based on the following applicable score conversion:

  11. Students are declared to pass the Thesis Exam if they managed to achieve a minimum score of B.
  12. The passing grade is determined by recapitulating the sum of all scores by the examiners to be recorded in the assessment form provided by the Program;
  13. Examiners and students must sign attendance and Minutes of Thesis Examination;
  14. The Minutes of the Thesis Exam, in addition to containing the assessment on students’ performance, also contains notes from the examiners regarding the revision of the thesis (if any);
  15. The assessment of thesis examination is declared in a qualitative and narrative description as: PASSED WITHOUT REVISION, PASSED WITH REVISION or FAILED, with additional notes from the examiners if any;
  16. If the Thesis exam is declared as: PASSED WITH REVISION, student must make improvements/revisions to his/her thesis draft in accordance with input from the examiner to be submitted within a maximum of 1 month;
  17. Failing to complete the revision of the thesis within 1 month, students are banned from attending graduation and the Program will not issue the academic certificate.
  18. If the Thesis exam is declared as FAILED, students must rework on the thesis by consulting with the Supervisor to have a retake Thesis Exam by re-enrolling to the Program.
