Beliau adalah seorang profesor hukum internasional dan dia ahli dalam bidang tersebut. Ia menjadi dosen di Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) sejak 1993. Ia lulus dari Fakultas Hukum Universitas Gadjah Mada dengan gelar Sarjana pada tahun 1993. Selanjutnya melanjutkan pendidikan Magister di Fakultas Hukum Universitas Padjajaran dan selesai pada tahun 2001. Pada akhir tahun 2012 Sefriani dapat menyelesaikan gelar Doktor Hukum Internasional di Universitas Gadjah Mada, kurang dari 3 tahun dengan predikat cumlaude.
