Undergraduate Study Program In Law Introduces the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Final Assignment Writing in Accordance with The Rules of Writing Ethics

On Saturday, October 14 2023, the Undergraduate Study Program in Law at the Faculty of Law, Islamic University of Indonesia held a Final Project Writing Ideas. In the first session of this activity, the Study Program invited technology and information experts from UII, Mr. Hendrik, S.T., M.Eng. who is a lecturer at FTI UII with a presentation entitled “Utilization of Artificial Intelligence in Student Final Project Research”.

“Currently, to support research activities, there is a model being developed in the form of a Large Language Model. It’s just that the output issued by LLM is predictive in nature. However, there are many LLMs that can also be used, such as BERT, GPT, Claude, LaMDA, LLsMA, DALL-E. Hence, the point remains that the information provided by LLM is based on existing data or legal materials so that the results of student research studies can be utilized. And the role of lecturers is very high in observing the results of student analysis.” as presented by the presentation of speaker Hendrik, S.T., M.Eng.

In his opening remarks, the Secretary of the Undergraduate in Law Study Program, Faculty of Law UII , Bagya Agung Prabowo, S.H., M.Hum., Ph.D. said that: “In an effort to improve the reputation of students’ final project research, the Undergraduate Study Program is holding a workshop on the use of artificial intelligence applications in research writing professionally.”

The second session of the event continued with the Final Assignment Writing Ideas Exchange where each student was allowed to discuss the research ideas of each lecturer representing the Department in the Undergraduate Study Program. The Representative Lecturers include Prof. Dra. Sri Wartini, S.H., M.Hum. (International Law Department), Eko Riyadi, S.H., M.H. (Constitutional Law Department), Syarif Nurhidayat, S.H., M.H. (Criminal Law Department), Siti Rahma Novikasari, S.H., M.H. (State Administrative Law Department), Ayu Izza Elvany, S.H., M.H. (Criminal Law Department), Dr. Nurjihad, S.H., M.H. (Civil Law Department), and Ratna Hartanto, S.H., LL.M. (Civil Law Department).

At the end of the event, the Head of the Undergraduate Study Program in Law, Faculty of Law UII , Dodik Setiawan Nur Heriyanto, S.H., M.H., LL.M., Ph.D. mentioned that “The Study Program really hopes that this activity can become a culture of discussion so that data is known on the extent of the use of technology in research carried out by students. Apart from that, as a form of anticipation, the Study Program is also encouraging universities to subscribe to applications to detect the use of LLM/ChatGPT or similar so that the quality of student publications can be well maintained.”

The event was held and participated by 100 participants from students and some of lecturers in hybrid format.
